Functions and conference




BRIDEX first took place from May 31 to June 2, 2007 at the International Convention Centre, Brunei Darussalam. It was officiated by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Minister of Defence and the Supreme Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces - who also toured the entire exhibition. The guidance of His Majesty has been instrumental in BRIDEX's inception.


BRIDEX 2007 saw the participation of 108 companies, representing 16 countries, with more than 60 international delegates from 17 countries and over 11,000 visitors during the three-day show. One of the highlights of BRIDEX 2007 was the "Defence White Paper 2007 Update: Defending the Nation's Sovereignty", which His Majesty also consented to launch during the opening of the exhibition.


BRIDEX 2009 saw tremendous success with 25,000 visitors, 200 exhibitors from 26 countries and 300 international delegates, representing 40 countries. His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan also attended the event. Several awards were given out to exhibitors with Jordan bagging the 'Most Creative Booth' while the 'Most Outstanding Domestic Booth' went to EDS Mobility Technology. 



BRIDEX 2011, coinciding with the golden 50th anniversary of Royal Brunei Armed Forces is proving to be another hit with a greater number of exhibitors and visitors, targeting over 300 exhibitors and 500 international delegates.
BRIDEX benefits from the support of the Ministry of Defence, Brunei Darussalam, and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, which helped to establish its position in the international defence and security calendar.

Here are a few "eating out" choices for you. You can choose from informal to formal eateries to well-established restaurant.


Hawker-style Food
If you are on a tight budget, then head on down to the hawker centers that offers fine delicacies at very reasonable prices. Some of the favorite dishes are satay, noodles, whole roasted chickens, grilled fish and steamboats. You can find these hawker stalls along the Brunei River in downtown Bandar Seri Begawan. Alternatively, they are also located in a purpose-built complex next to Jerudong Park. For scrumptious steamboat dinners and satay, you must go to the Persiaran Damuan Park on Jalan Tutong. Another hawker center is located in Gadong on the ground floor of Yaohan Megamart. It is an indoor hawker center and offers a variety of foods ranging from quiche to sushi!


Restaurant Dining - Asian
For a good mix of restaurants that offers good Asian cuisine, Gadong is the place for you. Asian food such as Chinese, Lebanese, Indonesian, Indian, Thai, Japanese and other specialty items such as seafood and Nonya food are available at Gadong. Most of these restaurants are run by family-run business. It has a warm and comfortable atmosphere. You'll also find many kedai makan (local eateries) at downtown Bandar. There are also good seafood restaurants along Jalan Muara and in Muara town. Other places with good food are Tutong, Seria and Kuala Belait with its varied selection of restaurants. Chinese cuisine is popular in Brunei with many fine authentic restaurants around. Famous Chinese restaurants in Gadong include the Emperor's Court and the Szechuan Dynasty. The Jade Garden in the Riverview Hotel and the Phong Mun in downtown Bandar are equally famous too.


Restaurant Dining - Western
For a touch of class, you can find that most major hotels have cafes that serves are mixture of Asian and western meals. There are also value-for-money buffet meals available. For high quality nouvelle cuisine, you'll find them at Deals Restaurant in the Sheraton Utama. Excellent British fare can be found at the Buccaneers in Kuala Belait. Enjoy the Tudor-style setting during your meals!


Fast Food
Just like any other part of the world, fast food had caught on very well in Brunei. You'll find a wide range of fast food such as Pizza Hut, KFC, and McDonald's in the city and at Jerudong Park. Local equivalents are Jollibee, Sugar Bun and Express Burgers.
As law in Brunei prohibit the public sale and consumption of alcohol, you will therefore notice that restaurants do not sell alcoholic drinks. Business hours for most restaurants are till 9 or 10 pm. Most of the hotels and major Chinese restaurants require the diner to make prior reservations, especially on the weekends.

Transportation

Going anywhere without a transportation? Therefore, you can use buses in Brunei or taxis or you can even rent a car by using the famous car rental in the world, Hertz, which is also available in Brunei.

Taxi and Bus Services
In the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, taxis are located at the multi-storey car park at Jalan Cator.

Visitors can also opt for chauffer-driven and self driven cars, which are on rental from major hotels and the airport.
Buses are regular, comfortable and relatively cheaper. There are six bus routes in daily operation in Bandar Seri Begawan - the Eastern Line, the Southern Line, the Western Line, the Central Line, the Circle Line and the Northern Line.

Buses operate from 6.30am to 6pm, with the Central Line Bus running every 15 minutes and the Circle Line every 20 minutes.
The Central Line stops at the following bus stations: Brunei International Airport, post office, Government schools, the Terrace Hotel, the Youth Centre, the main bus terminal in Bandar Seri Begawan, the Arts and Handicraft Training Centre, the Brunei Museum and the Malay Technology Museum.
The Circle Line stops at the main bus terminal in Bandar, the RIPAS Hospital, the Jame Asr' Hassanil Bolkiah, the Centrepoint in Gadong, Government offices, Immigration/ Labour Department, the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, the Islamic Dakwah Centre, Supa Save Supermarket, Terrace Hotel, Sheraton Utama Hotel and the Youth Centre.
The Northern Line has three routes, Northern Line 1, Northern Line 2 and Northern Line 3. The Northern Line 1 and 2 buses runs between Berakas Camp, the Brunei International Airport and the bus terminal in Bandar.

Northern Line 3 runs between the Berakas Camp, the bus terminal and the Malay Technology Museum in Kota Batu.


 

Ferry And Water Taxi Services 

One of the major tourists' attractions in Brunei is the picturesque water village, Kampong Ayer, dubbed the "Venice of the East".
Water taxis are used to get around the village, which is located near the capital. Water taxis can be hailed from the numerous `docking ports' along the riverbanks of the Brunei River and fares are negotiable.
Speedboats are used to travel to Temburong, which is one of the four districts of Brunei. These speedboats can easily be identified with its distinctive blue colour.
Those wishing to go to the Malaysian Federal Territory of Labuan and the Malaysian towns of Sundar and Lawas can board the ferries at Serasa Terminal, Muara. Services start from 7.45 am till 4 pm.

Golf: The exclusive golfing establishments of Brunei provide a great opportunity to the golfers. It is becoming a major attraction for visitors. Pantai Mentiri Golf Club and Panaga Golf Course are the main golf courses of this country.

Shopping: You can get earthenware ornaments, exotic furniture designs, mats and so on at very attractive prices in the malls and small shops of Brunei. Brunei also has many departmental stores that have all the big international merchandise brands on display.
